Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on 4th April 1972. She was also raised by her grandmother and grew up being an all-single child. Scott attended Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating, Scott enrolled into Temple University. Scott completed her secondary school education and also worked at two job. She was hoping to be an English teacher at high school. After three years of being teacher's assistant and studying her goal to become a high school English teacher came to a halt. As a poet started performing, she was able to perform in live poetry recitals. She later teamed along with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create the group. The two wrote You Got Me together. During Roots' performance she came out as an artist. Then she secured collaborations which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She was also able to gain experience on stage as she was a part of the Canada tour of Broadway production Rent. Also, she was the first signing agent for Hidden Beach Recordings.
